Behind the Scenes in Riviera Nayarit: My May FAM Trip to Iberostar Selection Playa Mita

At the end of May, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a FAM (familiarization) trip to Iberostar Selection Playa Mita, located along the breathtaking coastline of Riviera Nayarit. This experience was made possible thanks to the generous support of Iberostar, Vacation Express, and Nexxus Tours — and I’m so excited to share the highlights from this unforgettable work trip.

Arrival Day: Hello, Paradise

After a short drive from the Puerto Vallarta Airport (shoutout to Nexxus Tours for the smooth transfer!), we arrived at the stunning Iberostar Selection Playa Mita. The resort is tucked away on a gorgeous stretch of beach, and the lush landscaping and welcoming atmosphere set the tone for the trip.

Once we checked in, we had some time to explore the property on our own — from the sparkling pools to the beachfront views and beautifully designed spaces. That evening kicked off with a welcome cocktail at a bar overlooking the beach, followed by dinner at one of the resort’s restaurants. Since the dinner was served from a set menu, I wasn’t able to choose a meal that suited my taste, which became a theme throughout our stay — but that’s part of the FAM experience. It’s not about customization, but about exploring what’s offered to future guests. We wrapped up the first night with an early bedtime, getting ready for the full days ahead.

Day Two: Resort Tour & Sayulita Adventure

Our morning began with a site tour of the property — one of the best ways to get to know the resort. We explored all the room types, amenities, and restaurants. The standout for me? A restaurant designed to look like a train car. It was such a fun and unique detail that I know many travelers would love.

Following the tour, we attended training sessions where we learned more about the Iberostar brand and what Vacation Express offers to clients planning vacations throughout Mexico and the Caribbean.

The second half of the day brought us off property for a sponsored excursion to Sayulita, a colorful and laid-back surf town. On the way there, we had a surprise stop for a tequila tasting at a local tequila distillery. While I’m not a tequila drinker, I decided to live in the moment — and even though it wasn’t my thing, I loved experiencing it alongside fellow travel professionals.

In Sayulita, we split into smaller groups to explore the beach and local shops. I picked up some beautiful artwork and gifts for my parents, and some local Mexican coffee to bring home for my boyfriend.

Once we got back to the resort, I enjoyed a little poolside downtime before dinner, which was hibachi-style that night. Again, it was a set menu, but the atmosphere was fun and lively. We ended the evening with a
traditional tribal dance performance by local dancers — a cultural highlight that made the night extra special.

Day Three: Sailing, Snorkeling, and Salsa Dancing

Our final full day started bright and early with a catamaran sailing tour in Puerto Vallarta. This excursion offered three activities — and we did them all! We snorkeled, swam, and even jumped off the top of the catamaran (yes, I was brave and did it too!). I spent the rest of the time kayaking in the open water, soaking up the incredible views.

To close out the tour, we cruised along the coast while learning more about the nearby towns — great info for helping future clients decide where to stay or explore.

That evening, after a quick nap, we headed to our farewell dinner at the resort’s beachfront pavilion. The setup was festive and fun — complete with a taco stand, traditional Mexican sweets, live music, salsa dancing lessons, and a local mariachi band. It was the perfect send-off to an amazing few days.

Departure Day: Until Next Time

On our final morning, I woke up early and took a peaceful walk along the beach. The shoreline was quiet and serene, and it was the perfect moment to reflect on the trip before heading home. Sometimes the simple moments are the most meaningful — and this one was.

After soaking in the morning stillness, we packed up and boarded the Nexxus Tours transfer back to the airport. As always, leaving paradise is tough, but I returned home with so much knowledge to better help my clients — and a few souvenirs too.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a relaxing, family-friendly all-inclusive resort in a quieter part of Mexico, Iberostar Selection Playa Mita is a fantastic choice. With beautiful ocean views, unique dining experiences, and easy access to vibrant towns like Sayulita and Puerto Vallarta, this property truly offers something for everyone.
