Because no one wants to be "that tourist"... Hey friends! You know I love a good getaway—and while hopping on an international flight can be one of the most exciting parts of travel, it also comes with its own set of challenges. Whether you’re a seasoned globetrotter or heading overseas for the first time, here are my top international travel tips to help your trip go smoothly and safely (and make you look like a total pro while doing it!). Keep That Passport Up to DateThis seems obvious… until it’s not. Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, so don’t wait until the last minute to check. Need a renewal? Do it early—passport processing times can sneak up on you. Pro Tip: Take two paper copies of your passport—one to leave in your hotel safe and one to keep with you in a separate bag. It’s also smart to snap a picture and save it to your phone just in case. Stay Street Smart with Your Stuff Pickpockets exist—and yes, they love tourists. Keep your valuables (passport, phone, wallet) in zipped or hidden compartments, ideally on your body. Crossbody bags with zippers or anti-theft backpacks are a game-changer. Leave the fancy stuff at home—flashy jewelry, expensive bags, or designer clothes can make you a target. You can still look cute and put together without standing out too much. Dress with Local Culture in MindDo a quick search on local dress norms before you go. What’s considered casual at home might be seen as disrespectful in another country. When in doubt, aim for modest and comfortable—and bonus points for blending in. Be Mindful with Your PhoneFree Wi-Fi isn’t always secure, so avoid logging into your bank accounts or entering sensitive info on public networks. Consider getting an eSIM or international data plan to stay connected safely. And remember—always be aware of your surroundings when using your phone in public. have a money planDon’t rely on just one card or one method of payment. Bring a mix of debit/credit cards and a little local currency for tips or places that don’t accept cards. Let your bank know you’re traveling to avoid surprise declines. Learn a Few Key Phrases You don’t need to be fluent, but knowing how to say hello, thank you, and help in the local language can go a long way. Not only is it polite, but it also shows respect for the culture—and locals appreciate the effort. Pack Light, Pack SmartYou don’t need to bring your entire closet. Choose versatile, layered outfits and leave room for souvenirs. Make sure your carry-on has all essentials in case your luggage takes a detour—meds, chargers, a change of clothes, and snacks are a must. Trust Your GutThis is the tip I tell everyone: if something feels off, it probably is. Whether it’s a taxi that doesn’t feel right, someone getting too close in a crowd, or a “too good to be true” deal—listen to your instincts. Last but Not Least: Don’t OverplanYes, I’m a travel agent and I love a good itinerary—but some of the best moments happen when you’re just exploring. Leave room to get lost in a charming alley, stumble into a cafe, or discover a local market.
