Tips & Tricks for Planning the Ultimate Road Trip

From a Travel Advisor Who’s Been There

There’s something magical about the open road—windows down, music up, and adventure just around the bend. Whether you're planning a cross-country trek, a national park circuit, or a weekend getaway, road trips offer freedom and flexibility unlike any other type of travel.
As a travel advisor (and a road trip enthusiast who’s driven across the U.S. more than once), I’ve learned a few things along the way. Here are my top tips and tricks to help you plan a road trip that’s smooth, fun, and unforgettable.

1. Map Your Route—But Leave Room for Detours
Start with a general route that includes your major destinations, must-see stops, and lodging. Use tools like Google My Maps or Roadtrippers to lay everything out. But don’t over plan—some of the best experiences happen when you allow for spontaneous stops and unexpected adventures.

2. Book Accommodations in Advance (When Needed)
If you’re traveling during a busy season or heading to high-demand areas like national parks, book ahead. Even if you’re a go-with-the-flow kind of traveler, securing a few key nights—especially the first and last—gives your trip a solid structure. I can help you find unique stays, trusted hotels, or cozy local inns along your route.

3. Prep Your Vehicle
Whether you’re taking your own car or renting, make sure your vehicle is ready to go. Check tires, brakes, oil, wipers, and fluids. Keep an emergency kit in your trunk (jumper cables, flashlight, first-aid supplies, etc.), and don’t forget a spare tire. If renting, I can help you find the right vehicle with unlimited miles and full coverage.

4. Pack Like a Pro
Keep it practical. Think: layers, comfy clothes, and sturdy shoes. I also recommend packing a “car kit” with travel wipes, snacks, reusable water bottles, charging cords, paper towels, and a real map (cell service isn’t always reliable).

5. Download Entertainment Before You Leave
Audiobooks, playlists, podcasts—download them ahead of time so you're not stuck buffering in a dead zone. And if you're traveling with kids, preloaded games, shows, or activity packs can make the miles fly by.

6. Eat Like a Local
Skip the drive-thru and ask locals where they eat. Roadside diners, food trucks, and mom-and-pop restaurants often serve up the best food—and the best stories.

7. Build In Buffer Time
If you have a flight, cruise, or event waiting at the end of your road trip, plan to arrive a day early. Weather delays, traffic, and last-minute detours are common. A little cushion can save a lot of stress.

8. Don’t Skip Travel Insurance
Road trips can still benefit from travel insurance. Coverage for trip interruptions, rental car damage, and medical needs is worth considering. I always recommend it, especially for long-distance travel.

9. Share Your Itinerary
Let someone at home know where you’re headed and check in regularly. Solo traveler? Apps that allow real-time location sharing can provide peace of mind.

10. Make Space for the Memories
Bring a travel journal, a Polaroid, or keep a shared photo album with your road trip crew. The landscapes will be beautiful, but it’s those little moments—laughing at a wrong turn or catching a perfect sunset—that you'll treasure the most.

Let’s Hit the Road Together
Planning a road trip takes more than just plugging a destination into your GPS. I’m here to help you build the perfect itinerary, find the best places to stay, and make the journey just as amazing as the destination. Whether you're driving solo, with kids, or on a romantic getaway—I’ve got your back.
